Due to rising population density and declining soil fertility, food security in Mkanda in southern Malawi is declining. Small, self-sufficient farmers need ways to improve their food production and increase their family income. This project helps 150 farmers and their families to achieve higher yields and generate additional income from goats in an affordable, environmentally friendly way.
For many farmers on depleted soils, it is financially difficult to produce or purchase sufficient food. The use of artificial fertilisers has become unaffordable. Applying organic farming methods using homemade organic fertiliser from goat manure offers a solution. The project involves the purchase of 75 pairs of goats, information meetings on organic farming, training in goat keeping and organic fertiliser production, and education on the principle of passing on knowledge. The farmers themselves are responsible for building a fence for the goats. In the longer term, this will increase food security for around 750 people.
The project is being implemented by the local organisation Good Goal Foundation and the Dutch foundation Stichting Het Goede Doel, with support from Stichting Wilde Ganzen. Active Health Foundation is contributing with a financial donation.
